I remembered this short when kids were getting excited to see Luca (2021), which I did not realize until later it was from the same director Enrico Casarosa. The character of the father with bushy mustaches is the most obvious character that survived the transition to Luca.
La Luna is a whimsical fantasy set on a fishing boat, which rather than fish is set to catch something more magical. But at the core of the story, a boy is caught in between his father’s desires and his grandfather’s traditions, while learning to find his own path and self-confidence.
There is something unspeakably Italian about this sweet portrayal of the timeless struggle of generations that anyone can connect with.
