Two words – profoundly powerful.

This is a typical slice of life story, but the way it has been shot and presented is far from typical. We follow a drummer who starts to lose his hearing due to prolonged overexposure to loud sounds and his internal struggle to come to terms with the fact his life will never be the same.

Two aspects clearly stood out to me:

The superb acting by Riz Ahmed, who I remember seeing first as a defecting pilot Bodhi in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016). There’s not much dialogue, but he beautifully conveys the inner struggle with his face and especially the eyes. Besides many scenes are presented with the unspoken understanding between the characters related to the loss of hearing.

The use of sound and a wise decision to omit/distort it in specific scenes illustrate what the main character is experiencing at that very moment. Which does not only add deeper understanding but also an emotional punch at the key moments in the story.

I would sincerely recommend this to anyone who is either going through something that is pushing them into the handicapped territory or knows someone who has been going through a similar situation.
