Life (2017)

★★★ Watched 27 Aug, 2021

Not knowing anything about the movie beyond the basic plot, not even the sub-genre, made it an interesting experience. At least for the first half an hour until the creature’s true nature comes to light.

Not knowing it was horror not science-based made it more suspenseful, which is the way it is supposed to be. It’s been a while since I went into the movie completely blind (Netflix told me it is going off the service next month) so I took a chance and was pleasantly surprised with the detail of gore and disappointed with the lack of broader picture. There is basically just one scene beyond the space leaving the rest of the movie a very isolated incident. This personal gripe is directly related to not being aware of what I was getting into. Because taking into consideration its horror roots it perfectly fits into most similar plots about a group of people getting stuck in a single location with a monster and enjoying the ride while figuring out who will survive. The ending is more in line with an independent horror movie of the 70s and 80s than a typical Hollywood movie. I welcome this bold choice.

  1. I love Going into a movie completely blind like you did here. It’s An act of “trusting your gut”, as the saying goes. And It usually leads to a good movie watching experience.

My dad and I rented this the year it came out, and we both enjoyed it. The “Alien” plot is fun.

Who was your fav character? Or story line.

    E.F.

    1. Honestly it’s been a while since I’ve seen it, so I don’t recall the story in such detail. For some reason I’ve missed this review I did on Letterboxd just after seeing the movie. I usually put down my quick reaction when I log movies on Letterboxd and then when I have time I embellish the text with additional thought or put thing in a broader context.
When you have over 1000 movies behind you clear patterns start to emerge and very rarely you see a true original approach or certain aspect/scene. It’s all about building upon what came before and what speaks to you as an artist/creator.
I’ll research your question to jog my memory and reply here.
