Rocketman (2019)

★★★★ Watched 30 Jul, 2022

A powerful biography of Elton John whom I only knew as a singer and songwriter. I was never a huge fan, but I knew and enjoyed most of his hit songs. After he did the opening song for the Lion King I also started to admire his craft and versatility. He’s a top-class masterful musician of the generation.

The movie hits all the standard biographical bits of a famous musician from early years to eventual rehab. His story is not much different from many others on that level. What elevates it is the musical scenes which gave me goosebumps every single time. And that squarely sits on the shoulders of Elton’s evergreen music combined with Bernie’s songs from the heart. The performances are great across the board in particular the Rocketman himself (Taron Egerton).

After this, I will listen to his songs with a new level of understanding and appreciation. If this movie leaves you with nothing else than a deeper knowledge of the musical legend that is Elton John, the filmmakers have done their job right.
