Porco Rosso (1992)

This one has been on my watchlist for over 25 years now! Beautifully animated touching story about a bounty hunter pilot who was transformed into a pig after he survived a gruesome air fight above the Adriatic. Now he needs to fend off an American rivalry pilot who is in love with the same woman, the owner of a famous bar where all the pilots an sea air pirates are hanging out. At some point a young girl gets involved, an airplane designer and mechanic, who is repairing Porto’s airplane…

You can see and feel Miyazaki’s love for the airplanes through the beautiful shots of flying and simply moving through the air and the clouds. Even though there’s some shooting and cartoony violence, nobody gets permanently hurt and everything is portrayed in a light humorous spirit. I love the strong female characters as present in all Miyazaki’s films, even here in the world populated by brash men.
